Pix Is To Surpass Credit Cards in Brazil

Hey Payments Fanatic!
Pix is moving faster than anyone expected. Initially projected to surpass credit cards in e-commerce by 2026, it’s now set to take the lead by the end of this year. A shift fueled by speed, cost, and consumer preference is literally reshaping Brazil’s digital payments landscape.
For merchants, Pix isn’t just another payment method—it’s a financial advantage. Transactions settle up to 5x faster than credit cards, cost significantly less (0.22% vs 2.2%), and improve cash flow with next-day fund availability. In a market where margins matter, these differences make a real impact.
The biggest winners so far? Online retail and digital services, where Pix is already dominant. Travel, ride-hailing, and food delivery have also embraced it. Recurring payments, however, remain a challenge—until now. Pix Automático is expected to unlock new possibilities for subscriptions and other ongoing transactions.
“Pix Automático will definitely shake things up and revolutionize the landscape, unlocking new use cases we may not even imagine yet,” says Leandro Carmo, Brazil Regional Director at Ebanx. The study projects it could drive over $30 billion in e-commerce transactions within two years.
Yet, credit cards aren’t going anywhere. Digital banks and fintechs now handle 41% of online card payments, with platforms like Nubank, Mercado Pago, and C6 Bank leading the way. As digital banking adoption skyrockets, Brazil’s financial ecosystem is evolving—and Pix is set to play a key role in what comes next.
